This is the first guest post in the Journal, and I hope it will be one of many. This work has never felt like something I do alone. There are so many gifted practitioners holding space in their own ways, and I want this space to carry more than one voice.
From time to time I'll invite someone whose work I admire to share their perspective on a topic that matters to this community. The words are their own, offered in their own voice. I'm simply glad to make room for them.
To begin, I'm honoured to share Allison Marie of Awakened Anahata Wellness, on burnout and Karuna Reiki. It is gentle, and it lands. I hope it meets you where you are.
Burnout is a word we hear often, yet many of us don't recognize it until we're already living in it.
As a Usui and Karuna Reiki Master and Practitioner, I've had the privilege of supporting people from many different walks of life, caregivers, parents, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, teachers, and those simply trying to keep up with the demands of everyday life. While each person's story is unique, one common thread often appears: they have spent so much time caring for everyone else that they've forgotten how to care for themselves.
I've been there too.
Burnout isn't simply feeling tired after a long day. It can affect your physical body, your emotions, your relationships, and your connection with yourself. More importantly, it can quietly disconnect you from the joy, purpose, and inner peace that once came naturally.
This is where Karuna Reiki offers something truly special.
What Is Burnout?
Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, physical, and energetic exhaustion that develops after prolonged periods of stress. Many people push through it because they believe slowing down means they're falling behind.
You might notice signs like:
- Constant exhaustion, even after sleeping
- Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Increased anxiety or irritability
- Loss of motivation for things you once enjoyed
- Feeling like you're constantly "on," yet never accomplishing enough
- A sense that you've lost yourself
From an energetic perspective, burnout often reflects a nervous system that has remained in survival mode for far too long. When our body is continually responding to stress, it becomes increasingly difficult to access rest, creativity, intuition, or genuine presence.
Healing begins when we create space for the body and mind to remember what safety feels like.
What Makes Karuna Reiki Different?
Usui Reiki provides a beautiful foundation for relaxation, balance, and restoring life force energy. It gently reminds the body how to return to its natural state of harmony.
Karuna Reiki builds upon that foundation by inviting a deeper level of compassionate healing. The word Karuna is often translated as "compassionate action." Rather than simply recognizing suffering, Karuna embodies the willingness to meet that suffering with unconditional love and healing.
For those experiencing burnout, this compassionate energy can feel incredibly supportive. Instead of asking you to keep pushing, Karuna Reiki gently whispers:
It creates space for emotional release, deeper awareness, forgiveness, and reconnection with the parts of yourself that may have been neglected while surviving.
Burnout Often Lives Beyond the Mind
Many people try to overcome burnout by changing their schedule or taking a vacation. While those things can certainly help, they don't always address the deeper energetic patterns that contributed to the burnout in the first place.
Sometimes burnout develops from years of:
- People-pleasing
- Overgiving
- Difficulty setting boundaries
- Carrying emotional burdens that aren't yours
- Perfectionism
- Feeling responsible for everyone else's happiness
Karuna Reiki gently supports awareness around these patterns, not through judgment, but through compassion.
As energetic blocks begin to soften, many people notice they can breathe more deeply, sleep more peacefully, think more clearly, and reconnect with their own inner wisdom.
Healing isn't about becoming someone new. It's about remembering who you were before exhaustion convinced you otherwise.
The Role of Compassion in Healing
One of the greatest lessons Karuna Reiki teaches is that compassion begins within. Many people offer incredible kindness to everyone around them while speaking harshly to themselves.
Imagine replacing thoughts like "I should be doing more" with "I'm allowed to rest." Or replacing "I'm failing" with "I'm healing."
These small shifts create profound energetic changes. Karuna Reiki encourages us to extend the same love and understanding toward ourselves that we naturally offer others.
When compassion replaces criticism, healing becomes possible.
Healing the Nervous System
Burnout doesn't only affect the mind. It affects the nervous system.
During a Karuna Reiki session, many people experience:
- A deep sense of peace
- Slower breathing
- Reduced mental chatter
- Emotional release
- Greater clarity
- A feeling of being supported and held
While everyone's experience is different, Reiki invites the body into a state where relaxation becomes possible. When the nervous system begins to settle, the body can shift away from constant survival and toward restoration.
This doesn't mean every challenge disappears overnight. It means you begin responding to life from a place of greater balance rather than constant depletion.
Burnout Is Not a Personal Failure
One of the most important things I tell my clients is this:
Healing isn't about earning rest. Rest is part of healing. You don't have to wait until everything falls apart before allowing yourself to receive support.
A Gentle Invitation
Whether you're just beginning your healing journey or you've been exploring Reiki for years, know that there is no perfect way to heal. Each person's path unfolds differently.
Karuna Reiki doesn't force healing. It simply creates a compassionate space where healing can naturally occur, one breath, one session, and one moment of self-kindness at a time.
If you've been feeling exhausted, disconnected, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained, perhaps your body isn't asking you to work harder. Perhaps it's asking you to listen.
You deserve moments of stillness. You deserve compassion. You deserve healing.
May you remember that caring for yourself is not selfish. It is one of the greatest acts of love you can offer yourself and, ultimately, everyone whose life you touch.
With compassion,
